Profile

Thomas van Brakel is an accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon with extensive expertise in heart and lung surgery. Since 2021, he has been practicing at Catharina Hospital, where he specializes in complex cardiac and thoracic procedures. In 2006, he obtained his PhD from Maastricht University for his groundbreaking research on epicardial treatment of atrial fibrillation, contributing significantly to the field of cardiac rhythm disorders.

With a distinguished career spanning over a decade in academic medicine, Thomas has dedicated himself to advancing cardiothoracic surgery through clinical excellence, research, and education. His work at Leiden University Medical Center (2014-2021) established him as a leader in minimally invasive approaches and complex aortic procedures. As a board-certified European cardiothoracic surgeon and active member of multiple professional organizations, Thomas continues to shape the future of cardiac and thoracic surgery through collaborative care and innovative treatments.
